Pathmaker Internship Program

The Pathmaker Internship Program provides direct experience and education at Palomar Health’s two main hospital campuses, satellite and ancillary areas. The program offers high school and college students who are interested in pursuing careers in healthcare a meaningful and authentic experience so they can assess whether the healthcare field is a good fit for their interest and aptitude.  In a matter of months, our interns gain hands-on experience, connect with peers, network with professionals, and foster personal development as they prepare to enter the healthcare workforce. Annually, the Pathmaker Internship Program provides over 1,100 interns with crucial tools to join or re-join the workforce, making it one of the biggest internship programs in California.

The Pathmaker Internship Program is comprised of three levels:

  1. LEVEL 1
  2. consists of high school students between the ages of 16-18
  3. LEVEL 2
  4. is made up of interns who are over 18 years of age, and requires a 240-hour commitment
  5. LEVEL 3
  6. focuses on preparing Level II graduates to become certified Medical Interpreters

Pathmaker Interns are often at the patient’s bedside or gurney, assisting physicians, specialists, nurses and staff as an extra pair of hands, eyes and ears. Interns become knowledgeable about specific areas, supplies, types of cases and typical daily needs for those in treatment. They help with a variety of tasks that benefit patients and are deeply appreciated by the staff.

Many of our inpatients do not have families that live nearby, or they have family members with difficult work schedules that prevent them from frequent and/or lengthy visits. In these situations, people can become lonely, frightened, anxious, and stressed without some distraction. To focus thoughts away from their fears, Pathmaker Interns help patients by routinely checking in on them or sitting with them to talk about whatever the patient may want to discuss – regardless of the topic. They offer compassion and companionship that eases the patient’s burden for a short time.

Gifts to the Pathmaker Internship Program are an investment in the region. They help affirm the belief that the healthcare field is a positive, satisfying and rewarding career choice. In turn, a person’s decision to pursue this path helps provide for the ever-growing need of a well-trained healthcare workforce.
