Meet the Moirs: A Philanthropic Powerhouse

For decades, Dr. Doug Moir and his wife, Margaret, have been involved in a variety of efforts to honor Escondido’s past and plan for its future. Their concern for future generations has been a driving force behind their work to see Palomar Health’s new Palomar Medical Center Escondido become a reality.

Doug Moir, a former chair of the foundation board, now chairs the medical staff campaign to raise $5 million for the new hospital. Both Doug and Margaret have hosted fireside chats at their home, a 150-year old Colonial Revival in the heart of Escondido’s Historic District, where they share their passion for the hospital project with colleagues and neighbors. They couple has recently made a six-figure contribution in the form of an estate gift to the hospital. And, when Dr. Moir retires from his cardiology practice, the couple plans to donate the practice’s office building to the Palomar Health Foundation.

Their generosity is grounded in a simple, direct philosophy of compassionate giving and a genuine affection for their community. “We decided to make a commitment to the hospital because we love Escondido,” explained Margaret Moir. Dr. Moir agrees: “We believe it’s our responsibility to use our time, our talents and our treasures to help our community.”

Today, Dr. Moir is spearheading the medical staff campaign, which has raised about $2.4 million of its $5 million goal.

“We’ve been upfront about our support and we have conversations with others about how important this new hospital will be for the entire region,” he said. “I see people who have had a life-changing situation as a result of the health care they’re received at Palomar Health. And now, they may be very interested in ground-breaking medical technology, or the best way to treat diabetes or heart disease.

“So we need to find what people are passionate about and create programs that others will benefit from. People need to know that they can make a personal impact on the new hospital, and it’s an impact that will have far-reaching implications for years to come. Setting up an annuity, or making a commitment to a gift over the course of several years will make a tremendous difference.”
